Regarding the Dipping Sauce:
Half a cup of mayonnaise
Twice as much ketchup
One teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
A single teaspoon of horseradish sauce
Half a teaspoon of paprika, smoked
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 teaspoon of optional cayenne pepper
To taste, add salt and pepper.
Directions:
Get the onions ready:
After peeling, chop the onions into small pieces. For even cooking, keep them all the same size.
To ensure that the batter coats the layers evenly, slightly separate them.
Prepare the batter:
Mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, paprika, onion and garlic powders, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.
Beat the egg and combine it with the buttermilk in a separate bowl.
Whisk the dry ingredients until smooth after adding the buttermilk mixture.
Coat the Bits of Onion
Make sure to completely coat each onion slice by dipping it into the batter.
Gently press the panko breadcrumbs onto the battered onion pieces to ensure they adhere.
While the others are being prepared, arrange them on a dish or tray.
Sauté the onion bits:
In a deep pan, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
To prevent crowding, fry the coated onion bits in batches.
Cook until golden brown and crispy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
To drain extra oil, take them out and put them on a dish covered with paper towels.
Get the Dipping Sauce ready:
Mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish sauce, smoked paprika, onion and garlic powders, cayenne pepper (if needed), salt, and black pepper should all be combined in a small bowl.
Mix thoroughly until creamy and smooth.
Season to taste.
